Lighthouse State Beach also known as "its" Beach or Dog Beach, there really are two parts to this field the Ocean Side is the Beach, hike the steps up and cross Westcliff Drive and your in Lighthouse field, a Large open field quite Organic, it has three Picnic Tables and small Barbeque stands.little dirt paths wind through the field, and a nice grove of Eucalypti Trees that is home to Monarch Butter fly's during Dec/Feb.Its a nice Open space along the edge are clean well maintained Rest Rooms.Bike racks and Free parking.The Beach it self has a long flight of steps down to it.hand rails but the last two or three steps can be slippery and you must be careful. The public restrooms are up the stairs and about half a block away as a local, I've never used them. Not hard for most people, but the stairs can be uneven (use the railing!), and pretty difficult if you have trouble with stairs. You'll need to take a flight of stairs from the roadway (West Cliff Drive) 30 feet down to the beach. Just make sure your dog doesn't climb up the cliff or run past the point (on the north) where the beach narrows, since it might be difficult for the dog to get back to you. If, however, you *have* a dog, bring him/her for some canine socialization. Dogs are restricted between 10-4, but before 10 and (especially!) after 4 PM, there are a *lot* of dogs off-leash, so you might want to avoid the beach then if you're not a dog person. This is a dog-friendly beach we often bring our dog to run around and play with the other dogs. People bring blankets and enjoy a picnic on the beach, so there's good people watching. The waves are good, and there are often boogie boarders in the water. At low tide, there's plenty of sand, but there's not much left at high tide. The beach is scenic, with a great view of the lighthouse and across the bay to Monterey.
